Jennet Betts Finedon Sampler

This sampler is a simple design stitched entirely in cross stitch. Eight year old Jennet Betts Finedon finished her sampler in 1850. She has stitched three alphabets surrounded by a flowered border in subtle colors.

The original sampler measures 17 by 16 inches and was stitched on an uneven weave fabric, making the crosses elongated. Fabric to duplicate this is not readily available. When stitched on even weave fabric, the sampler becomes more elongated. Probably the only way to reproduce the original exactly on an even weave fabric would be to stitch each cross over 3 vertical and 2 horizontal threads.

The Stitch count is 178 by 231. Reproduction and stitching are by Jennett Whiteside. Jennett used 28 count Irish tea linen, making the design size 12 1/4 by 16 1/2 inches.
